Join us on our mission to rescue abused elephants. Our Elephant Sanctuary in Chiang Mai has been caring for these majestic creatures for over twenty-five years. It is our honor to share this most beautiful experience with our friends from around the world. Elephant Freedom Project offers visitors a unique experience while visiting our elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand. Our sanctuary is just one hour from Chiang Mai City. Elephant Freedom Project guarantees an unforgettable, intimate adventure with our elephants in their natural surroundings. Observe elephants foraging in the forest, interacting with each other, and playing in the mud and river– the elephants have been freed from elephant riding, performing tricks, and other unnatural behavior. We support independent ethical elephant projects that are now providing a better life for these gentle giants.
Our hope is to lead by example and contribute to a positive change in the perception of elephants, to witness a future where elephants are not poached, ridden, overworked, or abused, and are instead treated with care, love, and respect as all living things should be! Morning Tour
This tour starts at 10 AM and finishes at 1:30 PM. It’s perfect if you don’t want too much hiking or wish not to spend the entire day. Enjoy our half-day morning tour with our majestic friends.
This is a great experience; one you will not soon forget. Use Karen clothes, food preparation, elephant jungle hike, and lunch. You will feed the elephants two times during your visit.

Afternoon Tour
This tour starts at 12 PM and finishes at 4:00 PM. It’s perfect for those who prefer not to spend the entire day but want the best of what the full-day tour offers.
We start with lunch at a mountain retreat just steps away from our sanctuary, followed by preparing food for the elephants, taking an elephant river hike, elephant swimming and bathing, and finishing at a beautiful waterfall.

Looking for a truly authentic Thai experience? You will find that as we offer you a Thai lunch prepared by the Plern Home. Prepared just like she was cooking for family, you can’t get more local than this. Now sit back and relax and, enjoy yourself, spend time with your newfound friends while having lunch watching the elephants.
Elephant River Hike
Hiking along the river is very peaceful. The scenery is beautiful, the river’s water flows endlessly. Hiking with the elephants in such a majestic area just adds to the fun.
As we do not control the elephants in any way, it’s great fun to see them entertain themselves along the way. They say elephants never forget, they know exactly where we are headed. To the river to swim and play.
Waterfall Experience
You should check out our vids and image gallery. The waterfall experience is always a highlight of the day. The surroundings are peaceful, you really feel connected to nature. This is another spot you would never find on your own.
Everything from the path leading to the waterfall, the base of the waterfall, and the crossing of the waterfall are all absolutely beautiful. What a great moment to reflect upon life.
